[Peru] Riots: Violent demonstration

On 10 April 2025, in Lima - Lima District (Lima), dozens of residents, official public transport drivers, merchants and relatives of transport workers victims of extortion and hitmen attacks marched from Puente Piedra to the National Congress, demonstrating against hitmen attacks, extortions to transporters and increase in criminality. At least 20 thousand official public transport drivers supported the strike in Lima and Callao districts against criminality. The group demanded a meeting with congress representatives and called for greater measures from the national government against extortionists and hitmen attacks. Demonstrators forced passengers to get off buses that were not participating in the demonstration. Demonstrators also clashed with the police, which used tear gas. Another group of demonstrators carried out a banging pots and pans demonstration in the Palao housing complex in Independencia district, voicing their support to transporters and rejecting criminality.
