On 9 April 2025, police officers lobbed teargas as well as attacked and assaulted journalists using batons at Kirobon girls' high school in Sobea town (Rongai, Nakuru) for covering a stand-off between a playwright and the police. The playwright, who previously served as the secretary general of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and also a former Kakamega senator, had been blocked by police from accessing and overseeing rehearsals by Butere Girls', ahead of their scheduled drama performance on 10 April, leading to his arrest and detention. At least six journalists were injured, and their equipment damaged while several students sustained minor injuries following the incident.
