On 16 April 2025, protesters gathered against animal cruelty in Varna, provoked by the case of a man and woman who were charged by the Pernik District Prosecutor's Office for causing the death of stray animals for the purpose of obtaining material gain which has shocked the country. Protesters across the country demanded more serious punishments for animal abusers, and they have been gathering regularly for weeks.
